About Encore Autumn Royalty Azalea

Encore Autumn Royalty Azalea is among the original and most cold-hardy cultivars in the Encore repeat-blooming series, producing large, vivid purple-magenta flowers across spring, summer, and fall bloom cycles on a larger-growing shrub that reaches 4-5 feet tall and wide, sizable enough to use as a specimen or informal hedge rather than only a foundation planting. Its improved cold hardiness compared to some newer Encore introductions makes it a particularly reliable choice through Georgia's occasional hard winter snaps. As with all Encore Azaleas, it tolerates considerably more sun than traditional Southern azalea varieties, and more sun exposure improves both flowering and rebloom, while it still adapts reasonably well to the part shade found under established tree canopy. It needs acidic, well-drained, consistently moist soil, and its bold purple-magenta color makes a striking contrast when paired with white or soft pink Encore cultivars in a mixed azalea planting bed.

Planting Instructions & Regional Tips

Plant in acidic, well-drained soil amended with pine bark fines; set the root ball slightly above grade in Georgia clay. Give 4-6 hours of sun for the strongest repeat bloom and best cold hardiness expression. Mulch well and water deeply twice weekly in summer heat, since azalea roots are shallow and sensitive to drought stress. Once established in a Gwinnett County landscape, it needs only occasional deep watering during dry stretches rather than a regular irrigation schedule.
