About Premier Rabbiteye Blueberry

Premier Rabbiteye Blueberry is one of the earliest-ripening Rabbiteye cultivars available, producing large, firm, flavorful berries that begin ripening ahead of Brightwell and most other common Rabbiteye varieties, giving Georgia growers the first fresh blueberries of the season. It grows to a similar 6-8 feet tall and 5-6 feet wide as other Rabbiteye types and shares their strong adaptation to Southeastern heat and humidity as a native regional species. Premier is considered particularly vigorous and productive, with good disease resistance for the region, and its larger berry size compared to some other Rabbiteye cultivars makes it popular for fresh eating. Like all blueberries, it benefits substantially from cross-pollination with a second, different Rabbiteye variety planted nearby, which improves both fruit set and berry size. It requires the same acidic soil conditions (pH 4.5-5.5) as all blueberries, achieved in Georgia's clay through generous amendment with pine bark fines or peat moss at planting time.

Planting Instructions & Regional Tips

Plant Premier Rabbiteye Blueberry in full sun in soil amended with pine bark fines for acidity (pH 4.5-5.5). Pair with a second Rabbiteye variety such as Brightwell or Climax for cross-pollination. Water consistently during spring flowering and summer fruit development. Mulch with pine straw or bark to retain moisture and maintain soil acidity year-round. Check soil moisture regularly through the growing season, since Georgia's summer heat can dry out beds faster than expected, and inconsistent moisture is the most common cause of poor performance.

Premier Rabbiteye Blueberry FAQs

Is Premier Blueberry an early or late variety?

Premier Rabbiteye Blueberry is one of the earliest-ripening Rabbiteye varieties, producing fresh berries ahead of most other common Rabbiteye cultivars like Brightwell. Planting Premier alongside later varieties such as Powderblue extends the total harvest season across several weeks.

Is Premier Rabbiteye Blueberry native to Georgia?

Yes, Premier Rabbiteye Blueberry is native to Georgia and the Southeastern United States, which makes it naturally well adapted to the region's clay soils, summer humidity, and Zone 8a climate. Native status generally means less supplemental water and fertilizer are needed once the plant is established in a Lawrenceville landscape.
